Hill Haven Sugar Gliders

Young Nic got one of his hind feet twisted up in loose string in the sleeping pouch and it severed his foot off. I played with him before cleaning cages in the morning and he was fine. When I put out food in the evening I played with him again and he was fine then too. However, when I went to play with my gliders later that night I noticed Nic wasn't moving around normally so I pulled him out to get a closer look and discoverd that one of his hind feet was gone. At first I thought maybe mom or dad had hurt him but that made no sense because his parents had never done anything like this before (Nic was their 8th litter). So I began checking out the cage to see if there was something that might have done this. Everything checked out and there wasn't any obvious reason for the mishap. Then I looked into the sleeping pouch and found that there were loose strings inside and by the looks of it this is where the accident had occured. I had heard about gliders getting caught in loose strings and dying because owners never checked to see if their gliders were actually coming out of their sleeping pouches. So I always check on my gliders after dark to make sure that everyone is out eating and playing. But I learned a hard lesson today not only should we check that gliders are out we also need to inspect their pouches for loose threads that they can get caught up in. Mom and Dad  have already been tending to his injury and are even more protective of him now so he should be okay with them but I'll be keeping a very close eye on them just to be sure.
